What is Ischemic Heart Disease?

Ischemic heart disease or Coronary heart disease means abnormality in the coronary artery which supply blood to the heart becomes narrow or clotted. This could happen from the accumulation of fat in the artery wall thereby making the artery thickened and patients will exhibit symptoms when the artery becomes more than 50% clotted. Ischemic heart disease can be divided into 2 groups:

  • Chest pain (Stable angina) refers to syndrome from chronic ischemic heart and the patient experienced chest pain from time to time
  • Acute coronary syndrome refers to syndrome from acute heart ischemia. The patient will have acute chest pain or pain at resting stage for more than 20 minutes.
