HIV/AIDS

HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus, is a virus that attacks the body's immune system, specifically the CD4 cells (T cells), which are crucial for fighting off infections. If left untreated, HIV can lead to AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome), which is the final stage of HIV infection where the immune system is severely damaged, making the body vulnerable to opportunistic infections

HIV can be transmitted through:
1. Sexual Contact: Having unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex with an infected person.
2. Blood: Sharing needles, syringes, or other sharp instruments with someone who has HIV, or receiving contaminated blood products. The risk of HIV transmission through blood transfusions is extremely low in countries with rigorous screening processes.
3. Mother-to-Child Transmission: During pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding.

1. Primary Infection (Acute HIV): Occurs 2-4 weeks after infection. The virus replicates rapidly, and CD4 cells are destroyed, but the body fights back by producing more CD4 cells. Symptoms might be absent or resemble flu.
2. Asymptomatic Infection (Chronic HIV): The virus continues to multiply but at lower levels. This stage can last for several years, during which the patient may not show symptoms but can still transmit the virus.
3. AIDS: The immune system is severely damaged, with CD4 cell count dropping below 200 cells per cubic millimeter. The body becomes prone to opportunistic infections and certain cancers.
