Enlarged prostate treatment

Enlarged prostate treatment

Treatment would be based on the size of the prostate, age, and symptoms you have. There are options of medications and surgical procedures. Presently there are options of minimally invasive surgical options to reduce unpleasant effects, recovery time, and cost.

Medications include:

·        Alpha blockers: relaxes bladder muscle to quickly improve urination flow

·        5-alpha reductase inhibitors: hormonal therapy to shrink prostate and may require up to 6 months of treatment before seeing efficacy

Minimally Invasive Surgical options include:

·        Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) – removing most of the prostate gland to allow urine flow

·        Transurethral incision of the prostate (TUIP) – small cuts in prostate gland for urine to pass and is an option for small-medium enlarged prostate gland or patient with other health risks for surgeries

·        Transurethral microwave thermotherapy (TUMT) – uses microwave energy to destroy inner portion of prostate gland and shrink it to allow urine flow

·        Transurethral needle ablation (TUNA) – radio waves are passed through a needle placed on the enlarged tissue to destroy the excess portion and allow urine flow

·        Laser therapy - Laser therapy generally relieves symptoms right away and has a lower risk of side effects than does nonlaser surgery

·        Prostatic urethral lift (PUL) - Might be offered to some men concerned about treatment impact on erectile dysfunction and ejaculatory problems

·        Robot-assisted prostatectomy – generally done if you have a very large prostate
